An End to Plastic Bags?

Join an Online Event to Support Zero Waste.

By Shari Roan

Those of us who regularly perform beach clean-ups often encounter plastic grocery bags. These bags are a major threat to marine life.

According to Sierra Club, plastic bags are made from oil and fracked natural gas. Americans dispose of more than 100 billion single-use plastic bags each year. Only about 1% of all single-use plastic bags are recycled. Since this plastic isn’t biodegradable, it stays in our environment for centuries. When plastic bags find their way into our oceans and waterways, they have the potential to harm more than 600 types of wildlife through ingestion and entanglement. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, about 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic bags each year.

On Jan. 21, our friends at Sierra Club Florida Chapter will hold an online event on its Zero Waste campaign and its efforts to halt the use of plastic bags at Publix grocery stores. The event will help consumers learn how to reduce waste in their own lives toward a goal of zero waste. You can also sign the Sierra Club’s Stop Using Plastic Bags, Publix petition.
